Approved Agencies For Threshold Structures

And Special Inspections

As provided in Connecticut State Building Code, 2005, Section 1702.1, the term approved agency shall mean as approved by the Building Official having jurisdiction.

An approved agency, in order to perform required special inspections, shall be engaged by the owner or owner’s agent and shall not be engaged by the contractor whose work is to be inspected or tested.

An “approved agency” approved by the Building Official shall mean: (1) any person, firm or corporation which performs testing of construction materials or structures may be designated by the building official or engineering consultant to perform such testing only if its facility has received and maintains accreditation by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NAVLAP) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the specific service to be provided. Each such person, firm or corporation shall have a professional engineer licensed in accordance with the provisions of C.G.S. chapter 391 certify tests and reports; or (2) any person, firm or corporation licensed as a professional engineer or to practice engineering as a corporation or limited liability company under the provisions of C.G.S. chapter 391.

Independent Structural Reviewer

In accordance with Connecticut General Statute, Sec. 29-276b. (c), the Building Department has established a prequalification for any independent structural engineering consultant hired to review the structural plans and specifications of a proposed threshold structure or threshold addition. The qualified engineer must be licensed by the State of Connecticut and must have been the responsible engineer (i.e. sealed the plans) in charge of the structural design of any threshold structure.
